Priest accused of stealing $160,000 from his own parish turns himself in to police.Priest accused of stealing $160,000 from his own parish turns himself in to police LEAWOOD, Kan.(KCTV/Gray News) - A former Leawood Catholic priest accused of stealing thousands of dollars from his parish has surrendered to police.According to the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, Father Richard Storey turned himself in to the Leawood Police Department on Saturday on a felony theft charge.Storey is accused of stealing funds from the Curé of Ars Church, where he previously served as pastor.Church leaders said the reported stolen funds totaled $160,000.“This news is deeply painful for all of us in the Catholic community, particularly given the nature of the allegations involving resources entrusted to the Church through the sacrifice and generosity of the faithful,” Archbishop Shawn McKnight said.In September 2025, the Archdiocese said it was notified by the Prairie Village Police Department of a separate criminal investigation involving Storey and another adult.Following notification of that investigation, the Archdiocese said Storey advised leaders of his decision to resign as pastor of Curé of Ars.Following Storey’s resignation, the Archdiocese said it initiated an internal financial review, standard protocol when pastoral leadership changes at a parish, which included the Curé of Ars Church.Leaders noted that Archdiocesan parishes undergo routine reviews every three to four years and during this review, which took place a few months ago, officials indicated that they discovered information that warranted referral to law enforcement.The Archdiocese shared its findings with the Leawood Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the parish office, before Storey voluntarily surrendered this weekend.The Archdiocese said it has also been informed of Storey’s surrender.“These allegations are serious, the legal processes must be allowed to proceed, and Father Storey is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law or internal canonical process,” McKnight said.Storey’s first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday in Johnson County.The Prairie Village Police Department’s separate investigation involving Storey and another adult remains ongoing.The Archdiocese said no further information will be released until both the criminal and internal investigations are complete.Copyright 2026 KCTV via Gray Local Media, Inc.All rights reserved.
