Average April turnout expected for 2026 municipal election SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Across the three counties in the Ozarks, the turnout expectation is relatively the same as always, but the issues on the ballot could change that. In Greene County, Springfield Question 1 is back on the ballot after being voted down in November. Christian County has nine city elections, eight school elections, three special districts, one fire question, and a county-wide question. Polk County also has county-wide, school, and fire questions, but it also has something people might not see often: a hospital board election. Across the three counties, they’re expecting a turnout between 9% and 15%. With all of these different, and in some cases niche, topics, the Polk County Clerk, Rachel Lightfoot, recommends you do as much research as you can before heading to the polls, especially with how these local elections impact you. “Those are the elections that impact you as a voter and as a resident far faster,” Lightfoot said, “and typically a lot deeper in the pocketbook than those state and national elections. Also, when you’re voting on candidates in April or November, these are local representatives. They’re representing your cities. They are representing your schools. They are making decisions about children’s education. They are making decisions about local government. They are very important.” Christian County Clerk Paula Brumfield agrees. “April elections are the most important,” Brumfield said. “That’s where your tax issues, anything like that, are on the ballot. I don’t think a lot of people understand that, but yes, April is the most important election there is that affects you.” Greene County Clerk Shane Schoeller is reminding voters of the security of these elections as they head to the polls today. “You’re gonna cast that ballot into the election tabulator,” Shoeller said, “the equipment that we have, and of course, we have bipartisan teams that are checking you in to vote. We have bipartisan teams that work here at the office. So we have a number of chain-of-custody procedures to ensure that everything is protected. When you cast your ballot, we’re going to make sure it’s done correctly, following all the protocols we follow. Brumfield pointed out that some polling locations in Nixa have been changed. Before you head out, make sure you check your county clerk’s website for your assigned location. Polls open at 6 a.m. across the state of Missouri for the April 2026 municipal election.
