Darlington earns Fire Safe Community honor for third year DARLINGTON S.C. (WPDE) — On Friday, the Darlington Fire Department won the Fire Safe Community designation during the South Carolina Fire-Rescue conference in Myrtle Beach. For the third year in a row, Darlington has been named a Fire Safe Community by the Fire Safe South Carolina program. The department earned this title under the leadership of Deputy Fire Chief Charles Bailey, Assist. Fire Chief Brandon Maloch and Lt. AJ Cox. MORE: Rev. Dr. Simon P. Bouie, South Carolina civil rights leader, dies The department educated the community members on preventing fires, what to do if a fire starts, and how to stay vigilant. “Our entire department came together and worked really hard on implementing the Fire Safe South Carolina program ... I’m appreciative of the leadership within the Darlington Fire Department and everyone’s dedicated passion to making the City of Darlington a safer community.” Said Darlington Fire Chief Pat Cavanaugh. The department partnered with the American Red Cross and the South Carolina State Fire to provide smoke alarms to residents in need. lt. Cox spoke to students in Darlington County about fire safety.
