North Slope Borough police fatally shoot man in Utqiagvik.North Slope Borough police fatally shot a man while responding to a domestic violence call Saturday in Utqiagvik, Alaska State Troopers said.Two North Slope Borough Police Department officers were responding to a reported domestic violence incident in Utqiagvik around 4 p.m.Saturday when they “discovered a male suspect barricaded behind a door in the residence,” according to an online statement from troopers.“While breaching the door, the suspect emerged with a knife and both officers discharged their handguns,” troopers said in the statement.The man was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.The incident took place on the 4100 block of Herman Street in Utqiagvik, the North Slope Borough Police Department said.Officials had not released the name of the man killed in the incident, or the names of the officers involved, as of Monday morning.In a statement, the North Slope Borough said it wouldn’t be answering questions about the shooting.“We recognize the impact incidents like this have on families, loved ones, first responders, and the broader community,” the statement said.“We ask for patience as investigators work to determine the facts surrounding this incident.” The Alaska Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident at the request of the North Slope Borough Police Department, a common arrangement in cases where officers in smaller departments are involved in fatal shootings.The result of the state investigation will undergo a legal review by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
