77-Year-Old Man From East Machias Killed In Crash On Bucksport Road In Ellsworth Thursday Afternoon A 77-year-old man from East Machias was killed Thursday afternoon in a serious head-on collision with injuries, that had traffic in Ellsworth backed up for quite some time. Read More: Understanding The Recent Spate Of Fatal Accidents In Maine According to the Ellsworth Police Department, the incident took place just after noontime on the Bucksport Road. While the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have shared what they have learned so far. "Thomas Gaddis, 77 years of age of East Machias, was operating a 2017 Hyundai Elantra east on the Bucksport Rd. Burton Merchant, 62 years of age of Sorrento, was operating a 2014 Ram pickup West on the Bucksport Rd. Gaddis’ Elantra crossed the center line and the two vehicles struck head-on. Gaddis was pronounced dead at the scene and Merchant was transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital via Northern Light Ambulance with minor injuries." Traffic in the area was re-routed through the North Bend Road for a while Thursday afternoon while emergency crews from the Ellsworth PD and Fire Departments, the Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Maine State Police and Marine Patrol assisted with the traffic control and attending to the injured. The Ellsworth Police Department is still investigating the crash. We will update the story when more details are released.
