Metz, MD, MS, Named Co-Chair for the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at University of Utah Health.Metz, MD, MS, has been named co-chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah, effective immediately.Metz will serve in the role alongside Robert M.Silver, MD.A nationally recognized maternal-fetal medicine physician-scientist, Metz has served in multiple leadership roles within the department since joining University of Utah Health in 2018, including vice chair for research and division chief for maternal-fetal medicine.Her work focuses on advancing maternal health, strengthening clinical and translational research, and improving outcomes for pregnant patients and infants.As co-chair, Metz will help lead the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology across its clinical, academic, research, and educational missions in partnership with Silver.Together, they will support strategic priorities for the department, advance high-quality patient care and research innovation, foster faculty and trainee development, and guide the department’s continued growth as part of U of U Health’s integrated academic health system.Metz is an outstanding clinician, researcher, educator, and leader whose contributions have strengthened our department and institution in meaningful ways,” said Kristina Callis Duffin, MD, MS, dean of the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah.“She brings deep expertise, a collaborative leadership style, and a strong commitment to advancing excellence across our clinical, research, and educational missions.” Metz completed her fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine at University of Utah Health after receiving her medical degree and completing residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.She returned to the University of Utah in 2018, following faculty appointments at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Denver Health Medical Center & Hospital.Since her return, Metz has played a key role in expanding and supporting the department’s research enterprise.As vice chair for research, she has fostered faculty mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration while advancing nationally recognized research initiatives in maternal health, substance use in pregnancy, and COVID-19 in pregnancy.She is the principal investigator for the Utah Center of the NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, a large multi-center clinical trials network.She also leads an interdisciplinary NIH-funded Maternal Health Research Center of Excellence focused on reducing pregnancy-related complications and deaths in Utah.“I’m honored to serve in this role and grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting this department and the people who make it exceptional,” Metz said.“Obstetrics and gynecology at University of Utah Health have a strong tradition of excellence in patient care, education, research, and innovation, and I look forward to working alongside our faculty, staff, and trainees to continue advancing our missions together.” Metz currently holds the H.A.and Edna Benning Presidential Endowed Chair and is a professor with tenure in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine.She has authored or co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, holds multiple NIH grants, and has served in numerous national leadership positions, including on the board of directors for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and as deputy editor for Obstetrics & Gynecology.
