Iowa teen qualifies for state track after surviving near-death experience last summer.Iowa teen qualifies for state track after surviving near-death experience last summer URBANDALE, Iowa (KCCI) - An Iowa teenager will compete at state track this week in Des Moines after surviving a near-death experience last summer, KCCI reports.In July 2025, Urbandale junior Annabelle Schwartz was swimming with friends at Raccoon River and contracted E.After falling ill for a week, she was rushed by ambulance to the Iowa City hospital, where she arrived with near-total kidney failure.Schwartz developed pancreatitis, suffered a two-hour seizure, and was subsequently placed into a medically induced coma by her medical team.“With the seizure, you’re usually dead or brain dead from those,” Schwartz said.“It’s a miracle I’m still here and thriving and do what I love.” Schwartz was able to start running about a month after the coma.After competing at the state cross-country qualifier, she was more than ready to dominate the outdoor season.“Being in the hospital changes your mindset to how precious life is,” Schwartz said.“Running is something I really enjoy, so if I’m physically able to, I’m going to go do that.” Schwartz qualified for her first state track meet last Thursday after consistently improving her times.“I definitely knew if I could come out of the hospital, I could make it through.It pushed me to be a better version of myself running,” Schwartz said.She will race the 400-meter hurdles and run a leg of the 4x8 relay this week at Drake Stadium.Ten additional Urbandale girls will be competing.“Everything I’ve gone through, it’s inspirational to see how far I’ve come,” Schwartz said.Copyright 2026 KCCI.All rights reserved.
