Kobach joins victims’ families to urge Gov.Kelly to deny clemency to convicted murderers.Kobach joins victims’ families to urge Gov.Kelly to deny clemency to convicted murderers WICHITA, Kan.(KWCH) - Law enforcement from multiple counties in Kansas, along with family members of murder victims, attended a press conference by Kansas attorney general Kris Kobach on Tuesday.Kobach discussed the clemency requests of eight convicted murders on death row in Kansas.Those eight all made formal requests to governor Laura Kelly to commute their death sentences.Kobach and those at the press conference urged citizens to weigh in so clemency is not granted and the sentences remain in place.“The argument that these individuals have been on death row for such a long time is not an argument for clemency,” Kobach said.“If anything, it shows how careful the Kansas process is.” Among those seeking clemency last week were Wichita mass murderers Reginald and Jonathan Carr, and convicted killers Scott Cheever and Justin Thurber.Mark Befort, the brother of Carr brothers’ victim Jason Befort, said the killers’ continued efforts to change their sentence keeps them from fully healing.“You can try to imagine what we’ve been through, what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard, and you can get pretty deep into imagining, but you’re not gonna get all the way there,” Mark Befort told 12 News last week.Copyright 2026 KWCH.All rights reserved.To report a correction or typo, please email news@kwch.com
