Rural Hall residents prepare to speak out during Forsyth County planning board meeting.Rural Hall residents express concerns over data center proposal ahead of Forsyth planning board Residents in Rural Hall are speaking out about a proposed data center that could be built on more than 100 acres outside the town’s limits, near homes, a school, and a rail line."The water consumption, electricity, the humming of the noise and stuff in our small area.I just think it's just a bad idea," said Tena Phelps, a Rural Hall resident.Carol Moss, who has lived in the area for decades, said she's also opposed to the sale of the land for that use."I've lived here for 46 years in this neighborhood, and it is a small town, and I'd like to keep that small town status," Moss said.Residents have been vocal about their concerns, including speaking up at Monday night’s town council meeting."We do have a lot of people that are concerned. They do need to voice their opinions, however, and not leave it up to somebody else to voice their opinion. If you want, the opportunity to express yourself. It may not do any good, but nothing ventured, nothing gained," Moss said. Some of the biggest concerns shared by residents include the town’s lack of capacity for the water and electricity demands of the data center, as well as the road infrastructure, which they say cannot handle the construction traffic."I would love to see the people of North Carolina say we're not doing this in our state. We're not going to do it.We're not going to destroy it," said Patricia Osborne, another Rural Hall resident.Osborne said the proposals in neighboring communities is also disturbing."If they were to do one in Walnut Cove, where would we be then? It's just not a great thing for our town to have," she said.Several people spoke with WXII off-camera, saying they would prefer if the data center could be moved to another industrial park area instead of land in the middle of their neighborhood. They also expressed frustration that it would not bring enough jobs to the area for the impact that it would have. The matter will not go to Forsyth County commissioners immediately.A planning board is scheduled to meet Thursday to review the proposal and will hand off their findings and the application to commissioners, who will review it twice before conducting their own hearing.Public comment will be accepted.
