‘She was the kindest soul’: Tuscaloosa community honors nurse killed in DCH parking lot.‘She was the kindest soul’: Tuscaloosa community honors nurse killed in DCH parking lot TUSCALOOSA, Ala.(WBRC) - People gathered Saturday, May 16 at Snow Hinton Park in Tuscaloosa to honor the life of Ada Doss and support her family. The 27-year-old nurse was killed while walking to her car after work at DCH Regional Medical Center.A man speaking on behalf of the family at the event said it’s hard to find the words to describe what they’ve been going through, but the outpouring of support means everything.“It’s hard to put rational thought behind something so cruel. But we know that God is not surprised by any of it,” he said.Doss was described as a loving wife and mother to her two young children.People say one word that may fit her best is caring.“She was the sweetest. She was the kindest soul. And had she been asked for help by anyone, she would have. She would have helped graciously,” the family friend said.He went on to say Doss would be standing there if it were any one of their loved ones.On Tuesday, Doss was walking to her car after her shift when she was shot and killed in the parking lot of DCH Regional Medical Center during an attempted robbery, according to police.“I truly believe that the life of Ada is going to be a spark that’s going to change the city of Tuscaloosa, the state of Alabama, and hopefully the nation,” said Rev.Matthew Wilson, a former Tuscaloosa city councilman.Saturday’s vigil drew dozens of friends, DCH colleagues, and community members.“Most times people don’t even think about the persons who are working. It’s always about the people who are coming in,” Wilson said.Officials say the man charged in her death showed signs of mental health issues.“This is going to bring a heightened response to the need for legislation, the need of care, and heightened security,” Wilson said.DCH has already started adding more security, including off-duty police officers and escorts for employees walking to their cars.A family friend said if it takes something like this to draw people closer to each other and to God, then so be it.“Ada Catherine would stand in that gap. Those of you that know her know that she would stand in the gap for anyone,” the friend said.Police charged 41-year-old Matthew James Taylor with capital murder. He is in the Tuscaloosa County Jail with no bond.To help support the Doss family, click or tap here.Get news alerts in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store or subscribe to our email newsletter here.Copyright 2026 WBRC.All rights reserved.
