Historic Rhea County Courthouse & Museum Expanding Access. The Rhea County Department of Tourism announces a special Sunday opening of the Historic Rhea County Courthouse & Museum on Sunday, July 19 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m."Thank you to the historical Society for your assistance," officials said."Known around the world for its connection to the historic 1925 Scopes 'Monkey Trial,' the courthouse and museum continue to welcome visitors from across the country who want to experience one of Tennessee’s most unique historic landmarks." Tourism officials shared that this opening is part of a continued effort to expand access to the courthouse and museum through additional hours and more weekend opportunities for both visitors and local residents.“We know many families and travelers are unable to visit during regular weekday hours,” said Rhea County Tourism Director Alex Fine.“We are working hard to create more opportunities for people to experience the history, heritage and stories that make Rhea County so special.” Guests visiting on July 19 can explore exhibits inside the Scopes Trial Museum, learn about Dayton’s nationally known history and experience the beautiful historic courthouse that has stood as a centerpiece of downtown Dayton for over a century. The public is encouraged to stop by, bring family and friends, and spend the day discovering local history in the heart of Rhea County. For more information about attractions, events and tourism opportunities in Rhea County, visit VisitRhea.com.
