Horry Co. police assist in 2015 Pennsylvania homicide case arrest (WPDE) — Members of the Horry County Police Department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) assisted in the arrest of a person believed to be connected to a cold case. Police said Betty Jane Adams, 60, is believed by investigators to be connected to a homicide case from 2015, in Middlesex Township, Pennsylvania. Booking records show she was arrested by Horry County Police on May 18. "Our strong partnerships with agencies across the country are crucial," the department said in Facebook post. ________ On May 1, 2025, John Wesley Alleman, 68, was found dead inside his home with a gunshot wound to the head in Cumberland County, PA, according to the affidavit. The coroner reported that the position Alleman was laying in was "inconsistent for the victim to have fired the gun with his right hand." Adams' name at the time was "Betty Jane Brooks" and she's listed as a defendant in the affidavit. She was interviewed on scene. Furthermore, the affidavit said she initially told police that Alleman grabbed a firearm during an argument and fired at her before shooting himself. Adams said she moved the firearm to the dresser following the incident to keep it from the dog. Records said a search of the home failed to find the first of two gunshots reported by Adams. Adams and Alleman were believed to be in a romantic relationship at the time of his death. Adams continued with the narrative that the shooting was a suicide throughout the investigation, according to the affidavit. ___________ On April 14, 2026, the affidavit said authorities reviewed case details including gunshot evidence, and found it impossible for this case to be a suicide. The affidavit said Adams is "criminally culpable in the homicide" of Alleman.
