Biddeford mayor nominates interim city manager.Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain has nominated Cornell Knight to serve as the interim city manager, temporarily succeeding Truc Dever, who announced her resignation in April after less than a year on the job.His nomination will be presented to the City Council for approval on June 16.If approved, Knight will begin his role on June 17.Knight has more than four decades of experience in Maine municipal management, including holding multiple town and city manager positions, according to a Wednesday news release from the city.Most recently, Knight served as acting city manager of Waterville and has also stepped in as interim manager in Pittsfield, Orono, Bar Harbor and Farmington.Knight also served as town manager of Bar Harbor from 2014 to 2022 and has held manager posts in Baileyville, Hallowell, Jay, Winthrop and Topsham.LaFountain said he was confident in his nomination, citing Knight’s track record.“I am confident he will provide effective management and continuity for city operations,” he wrote in the news release.“He brings the experience and depth of municipal expertise that Biddeford needs right now.” Knight said he was honored to receive the nomination and is committed to working alongside Biddeford staff to serve residents.He also said he looks forward to partnering with LaFountain and the City Council to “ensure the city’s goals and priorities remain front and center.” “My goal will be to ensure continuity of operations and effective day-to-day management as the city moves forward in its search for a permanent city manager,” Knight said.Dever was hired as city manager last summer, succeeding Jim Bennett.In her resignation letter, submitted in late April, Dever cited the “scope and complexity of the issues facing (the city) — many of which are long-standing and systemic.” Dever has declined to comment further on her departure from the city.In Wednesday’s news release, LaFountain again thanked Dever for her service to the city and wished her well in the future.June 16’s City Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.in council chambers.
