Flagler detectives arrest Virginia fugitive wanted in wife's murder, sheriff says.Flagler detectives arrest Virginia fugitive wanted in wife's murder, sheriff says A man accused of murdering his wife in Virginia was arrested Wednesday in Flagler County, according to the sheriff's office.Ross Butler, 56, is being held without bond as he awaits extradition to Virginia, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.Butler — whose previous arrests in Flagler County reportedly include DUI, driving with a suspended license, and marijuana possession — was apprehended after detectives with the sheriff's office's Criminal Intelligence Unit determined he was staying in a Flagler Beach motel, the release states.The arrest itself took place outside AdventHealth Palm Coast, where Butler was released Wednesday after having recently been admitted.He was wanted by the Chesterfield County Police Department on a fugitive arrest warrant for charges including first-degree murder, abduction, and strangulation, according to the release.Chesterfield police have been investigating him for more than four years in light of suspicious circumstances surrounding the December 2021 death of his wife, Ashlee Butler."Although the death was reported as a suicide, detectives determined the evidence at the scene and the victim's injuries were inconsistent with suicide, believing the scene had been staged after she was strangled to death," the release states."On May 18, 2026, a grand jury in Chesterfield indicted Butler on murder and strangulation charges."
