West Memphis 3 DNA test results expected next month Legal team seeks forensic breakthrough in 1993 Arkansas murders WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (WMC) - Six years after being given the green light to use new DNA technology to test the evidence, the legal team for the West Memphis 3 says the results of those tests could be done by next month. Attorney Lonnie Soury, a spokesperson for Damien Echols, said the evidence is being handled at the Bode Technology DNA lab in Virginia. He said ligatures used to tie up 8-year-old victims Michael Moore, Christopher Byers and Stevie Branch, along with hair, has been at the lab since last fall. Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were convicted of the 1993 murders in West Memphis, Arkansas and spent 16 years in prison. “If we get a hit on somebody’s DNA, then it’s up to the authorities to prove, to reopen the case. We would ask them to reopen the case,” Soury said. “They’d be hard pressed to walk away from it. I don’t think you and the rest of the media would stand for that. I mean, that would be shocking.” The boys were hogtied ankle-to-wrist with their own shoelaces. The hope is that the boys’ killer or killers left skin cells in the ligatures when they were tied. Soury said the new DNA testing could be completed by the end of July. Click here to sign up for our newsletter! Click here to report a spelling or grammar error. Please include the headline.
