9 sea turtles released on Dauphin Island after months of rehabilitation 6 Kemp’s ridley and 3 green sea turtles returned to Gulf waters following treatment at Audubon Aquarium Rescue DAUPPHIN ISLAND, Ala.(WALA) - Nine sea turtles returned to Gulf waters Thursday morning at West End Public Beach on Dauphin Island after months of rehabilitation at Audubon Aquarium Rescue in New Orleans.A large crowd of families, children and beachgoers gathered to watch the release.“I was actually surprised. It was a cool experience. It was really cool to be close to the sea turtles,” said Naomi Craft, a spectator at the release.Gabriella Harlamert, stranding and rehab coordinator at Audubon Aquarium, said the public events help people connect with marine life.“We love inviting the kids and seeing their faces.Seeing a sea turtle for the first time is incredible,” Harlamert said.Rescued turtles too young to determine sex The crew does not yet know the sex of the released turtles.“So they are just too young for us to be able to tell. When they’re full-grown adults, the males will have the longer tails,” Harlamert said.Six of the turtles are Kemp’s ridleys that were rescued after becoming cold-stunned, or hypothermic, in New England waters in November.Three others are green sea turtles that were exposed to oil in Louisiana waters earlier this spring.Members of the public spotted the turtles and called them in.Rescue crews say public calls play a major role in helping injured and stranded marine life survive.“We encourage the public to report any and all stranded animals. If you see anything, even if you’re not sure, we’d much rather you call it in,” Harlamert said.Four more sea turtles remain in rehabilitation at Audubon Aquarium Rescue, including two from the New England cold-stunned group and two local turtles.Officials remind the public to report stranded or injured marine animals if they see them along the coast.Copyright 2026 WALA.All rights reserved.
