Rotary Kids Free Fishing Day: Fun for the whole family in Traverse City.More than 250 young anglers and their families are expected to attend the annual Rotary Kids Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m.The event will be held at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes campus in Traverse City and will include the stocking of 500 brown trout.The free fishing event is open to children accompanied by an adult, offering them a chance to enjoy fishing fun.The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will oversee the stocking of 500 brown trout, each 10 inches or longer, into the campus harbor.Fishing rods, reels and bait are provided for all participants.Children who attend the event also have the option to bring their own fishing gear.Experienced volunteers, including members of Rotary Clubs and cadets from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, will be available to assist with baiting hooks and teaching fishing skills.The Northwest Michigan Fishing Club will offer a fish cleaning service for the young anglers.Additionally, the Great Lakes Children’s Museum will host a free fish painting activity for children waiting to fish.Coast Guard helicopter flyover is scheduled to take place during the event.Parking is available at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus, located at 715 E.Front St.in Traverse City, just east of the Delamar Hotel.The Free Fishing Day is sponsored by Traverse City Rotary Clubs, Rotary Camps & Services, Northwestern Michigan College, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Rhonda & Michael Estes, Great Lakes Children’s Museum and the Northwest Michigan Fishing Club.
