SLED charges Georgia man for officer-involved shooting in Aiken County

A Georgia man is facing charges from South Carolina Law Enforcement Division following a May 8 officer-involved shooting in Aiken County.Anthony Hayes Cantwell, 39, was charged by SLED with two counts of first-degree assault and battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes and three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, according to a media release from SLED.The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office received a request May 8 to assist South Carolina Highway Patrol with a vehicle pursuit on Interstate 20.Cantwell, who was the driver of the fleeing vehicle, got out and ran toward the westbound lanes after the pursuit ended.Cantwell was shot after pointing a firearm at deputies.No deputies were injured during the incident.According to arrest warrants from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Cantwell pointed a firearm at Aiken County sheriff’s deputies and a South Carolina Highway Patrol state trooper.According to the warrant, the weapon used was an AR-15 and that Cantwell took a shooting stance and raised the firearm to his shoulder in an aggressive posture toward the deputies, sergeant and state trooper.A separate warrant stated that Cantwell was prohibited from having a firearm due to previous convictions of a violent offense.Following the shooting, SLED was requested by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety for an investigation.Cantwell was booked into the Aiken County detention center May 14 and has no bond.Cantwell's case will be prosecuted by the Second Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
