Eight new deputies graduate peace officer training academy, join Lucas County Sheriff’s Office PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WTVG) - Eight new deputies graduated from the Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Academy and are preparing to join the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. The graduates completed their training as safety remains a priority across Toledo and Lucas County.Commander Cheryl Przybylski of the Owens Police Academy said the new deputies will face challenges as they begin their careers.“It’s probably gonna be a shocker for some of them,” Przybylski said.“They get to see some of the stuff that the officers out there now go through on a daily basis because the gang violence is something that is almost a daily basis for all of the officers that are out there,” added a deputy with the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office.Newly graduated Deputy Henry Newsom said he is ready to serve the community.“I’m ready to step in to try to help be a part of the solution, try to dwindle down some of these problems...try to hopefully be a motivation to the youth to try to do something positive with their lives,” Newsom said.Newsom adds the role allows him to challenge himself while providing for his family.Graduate Emilie Reese said her family history in law enforcement inspired her career choice.“I’m just hoping to be a familiar face, be a police officer that people are comfortable coming up to, not worried, ask for help, and that they’re glad when I show up and not scared,” Reese said.Przybylski said the new deputies could help reach younger generations.“Any addition that we can have with the younger generation to maybe get some of the message across and maybe to change how things are handled sometimes and maybe kind of give a little bit of encouragement to the younger generation will be good,” Przybylski said.Newsom said the academy taught him about the importance of integrity in gaining trust from those in Lucas County.Latest Local News | First Alert Weather | Crime | National | 13abc Originals Copyright 2026 WTVG.All rights reserved.
