To the editor: Alaska House Republicans recently voted to eliminate sick leave for many workers in the state.Fairbanks Republican Will Stapp said: “It’s actually been my number one priority since I got back here this year”.Stapp claimed that seasonal employees saved their sick leave until the end of their term and used it right before their departure, leaving employers short-staffed.Another Republican, Sarah Vance of Homer, said the sick leave law is “gutting the small businesses in my area.” Let’s look at the actual numbers. The law gave workers one tiny hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. If during a 14-week season a person worked 40 hours each week, they would then get a total of ...18.7 hours of sick leave; not even two and one-half days total.A worker may need to use these few sick leave hours during that 14-week season, but even if they did save them until the very last day of their employment (unlikely), it would be a weak employer that had their business “gutted” due to 18.7 hours of sick leave being used or employers being “short-staffed,” as Fairbanks Representative Will Stapp claims.Do you want fairness for seasonal workers, our state and country? Then never vote Republican.
