Hoover Dam draped in flag for nation.Hoover Dam draped in flag for nation's 250th birthday Tuesday, May 26, 2026 | 12:32 p.m.A 300-foot-wide, 150-foot-tall American flag now hangs across the face of Hoover Dam, illuminated by patriotic lighting in red, white and blue — what officials are calling “the most ambitious long-duration installation ever attempted” at the historic structure.The display, running through July 4, was launched Monday evening when leaders from Arizona and Nevada gathered at the states’ border to honor soldiers who been killed and open one of various celebrations being held throughout the nation marking the 250th year of America’s independence.“Hoover Dam represents the innovation, determination, and spirit that helped shape both the American Southwest and modern Las Vegas,” Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in a statement.“As millions of travelers begin their summer journeys, this activation creates an unforgettable visual moment that honors Memorial Day, celebrates American achievement, and shines a national spotlight on Southern Nevada this summer.” This summer, the dam will be part of the “Great American Road Trip” initiative encouraging Americans to explore historic destinations, scenic routes and “uniquely American experiences” across the country.Department of Transportation collaborated with the Great American Road Trip to develop a map of different iconic U.S.locations by region, including the Grand Canyon National Park, Roswell UFO site in New Mexico, the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Ala., and a park in Winslow, Ariz., that was mentioned in the Eagles’ debut single “Take It Easy.” Las Vegas will be hosting its own celebrations leading up to July 4 with free fireworks shows scheduled on the Strip and downtown for eight straight weekends.On July 4, the Strip Spectacular fireworks show will return and light up the skies above the ARIA, Caesars Palace, Fontainebleau, MGM Grand, Planet Hollywood, Resorts World, the STRAT, the Venetian and Treasure Island.“Hoover Dam has always stood for something bigger than just infrastructure alone,” Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson said in a statement.“Hoover Dam continues to serve millions of people across the Southwest, and as we begin the final road to America 250 in the summer travel season, we’re going to celebrate in a memorable way.”
