Three Kansas City firefighters injured while battling apartment fire.Three Kansas City firefighters injured while battling apartment fire KANSAS CITY, Mo.(KCTV) - Three Kansas City firefighters were taken to area hospitals Tuesday night after they were injured while battling a fire in a vacant apartment building.Crews were dispatched at 6:52 p.m.to the 5200 block of Independence Avenue, where they arrived to find heavy fire coming from a vacant, three-story multi-family building, according to the Kansas City Fire Department.Firefighters initially went inside to fight the fire with multiple hose lines, but heavy fire conditions were on multiple floors and even in the basement.About 40 minutes into the response, at 7:32 p.m., a mayday was called for a firefighter in distress.The firefighter was quickly pulled out by crews working nearby.Command then made the call to clear everyone from the building and shift to a defensive attack from outside.The fire was brought under control at 8 p.m.Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, and a third had more significant injuries, though officials said all three injuries are non-life-threatening and the firefighters are in stable condition.No civilians were found inside the building, and searches were reported clear.Dangerous Buildings and City Planning were requested to respond, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.Copyright 2026 KCTV.All rights reserved.Join The Conversation We want to hear what you think.Create a free account to share your thoughts.Read our community guidelines here.
