Bomb squad called to South Portland home after police find 'suspicious substance'.Bomb squad called to South Portland home after police find 'suspicious substance' while executing warrant Neighbors were evacuated from their homes as a precaution Neighbors were evacuated from their homes as a precaution Neighbors were evacuated from their homes as a precaution A man is in custody after police found a suspicious substance and black powder inside his South Portland home, a discovery that prompted a bomb squad response and the evacuation of neighboring homes.John Flumerfelt, 40, was arrested and transported to the Cumberland County Jail after the South Portland Police Department and Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team executed a high-risk search warrant at 65 Florence St.on Wednesday.South Portland officials said that during the law enforcement operation, detectives found black powder and an unidentified suspicious substance.The South Portland Fire Department and Portland Police Bomb Squad were called to the scene for an evaluation to ensure public safety, and residents of nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.The residents who were evacuated have since been given clearance to return to their homes.The South Portland Police Department has since determined that the area is safe and there is no ongoing threat to the community, according to city officials."We would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the service of this warrant.We recognize that road closures and evacuations are inconvenient and difficult, but such steps are often necessary to ensure the safety of all involved," the city said in a news release.Flumerfelt has been charged with criminal use of explosives, and officials said he could face additional charges related to firearm offenses pending the outcome of an investigation.
