A preliminary exam is scheduled for two Detroiters accused of murdering a 15-year-old Berkley girl four years ago. Russell Deshawn-Deangelo McGilary, 22, and Andrew Angelo Walker Jr., 24, are charged with first-degree premeditated homicide and felony firearm for the death of Janiya Brown. They’re accused of shooting the teen multiple times after assaulting her with a handgun. Her body was found outside of a vehicle on May 11, 2022 in the 8800 block of Burnette Street in Detroit. Janiya was killed just a few weeks after moving to Oakland County from Ohio. As reported by WXYZ Detroit, Janiya’s mother was murdered in 2021 in the Cleveland area, and the following year Janiya’s aunt brought her to Michigan to live with her in Berkley. Janiya, McGilary and Walker knew each other, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. Worthy said more information and evidence on the case will be presented during the preliminary examination, scheduled for July 17 before 36th District Judge Shawn Jacque. The judge will then determine if there’s probable cause to advance the cases to Wayne County’s 3rd Judicial Circuit Court for possible trial. McGilary and Walker are held in the Wayne County Jail. Cases advance against Floridians charged in alleged road rage confrontation in Bloomfield Twp.
