Republicans narrow governor’s race ahead of state convention after Stewart’s campaign suspension.Republicans narrow governor’s race ahead of state convention after Stewart’s campaign suspension UNCASVILLE, Conn.(WFSB) - Delegates have only two gubernatorial candidates from which to choose when the Connecticut Republican convention begins Friday morning.As the party convention kicks off at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, it’s left to deal with the aftermath of Erin Stewart’s campaign suspension.Stewart dropped out of the race less than 24 hours before it following a report that detailed how she used a city credit card while she was mayor of New Britain.It was a three-way race.Now it’s down to Ryan Fazio and Betsey McCaughey.Convention preview The state convention is where party delegates meet to formally endorse candidates, including for governor.Stewart threw her support behind Fazio and called on her supporters to do the same.“We want to engage her supporters and every single voter across the state in the months to come, and I will work as hard as I can to build those relationships, build that trust,” Fazio said.Fazio said his campaign is looking forward and focused on uniting the party and building a winning coalition for November.McCaughey said her campaign is focused on other issues.“Instead of talking about Erin’s spending, we’re focused on the Democrat spending and how to stop it,” she said.Both candidates said they are ready for the convention.State police are investigating Stewart’s spending.She has not been charged with any crimes.Copyright 2026 WFSB.All rights reserved.
