George W. Bush and Michelle Obama paid homage to their 2018 viral moment when the two attended the on Thursday, June 18. After more than a decade of planning and construction, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and their daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, were on site to see the Obama Presidential Center finally open to the public. Also in attendance were all the former living presidents and first ladies, excluding President Donald Trump and Melania Trump. At the event, Bush caught up with friend Michelle Obama and the two almost re-created their funny moment in 2018 when he handed her a mint at John McCain’s funeral. This time, the duo smiled and posed together as Michelle Obama held a tin box of Altoids. During their talk, he recalled the exchange the two had at McCain’s funeral. “I get a little antsy, as I’m sure you know. And I was sitting next to Michelle, that’s who I sit next to at funerals,” he told Jenna. Bush continued, “I was kinda teasing her and stuff, and I slipped her an Altoid. Not as a joke, but I thought she might want one.” He remembered after they left the service, Jenna informed him in the car that the moment was trending. Bush then explained why he thought the interaction went viral. “It turns out the country is starved to see a white center right Republican and an African-American center left Democrat having fun, and being able to converse, not as political figures, but as citizens,” he shared. Michelle Obama also spoke about the moment in 2018 when she was promoting her memoir, “Becoming.” “He has the presence of mind and the sense of humor to bring me a mint, and he made it a point to give me that mint right then and there and that’s the beauty of George Bush,” she praised. She further gushed about their friendship in a TODAY interview with Jenna in December 2019. Michelle Obama said that whenever she and Bush reunite they catch up on stories about their children and parents. “Our values are the same. We disagree on policy, but we don’t disagree on humanity.
