Split vote sinks York County Pride Month proclamation KITTERY, Maine (WGME) -- June is Pride Month, but for the first time in three years, York County commissioners recently rejected a proclamation acknowledging the month. The proclamation aimed to convey the county's support of Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community. But with one commissioners absent from the vote, they were split 2-2. Wednesday's meeting began with public comment, where one woman from Kittery, Susan Wiswell, urged the board to reject the proclamation. "The decisions made by this board can reflect either well or badly on the citizens it purports to represent. I, for one, refuse to celebrate sin. Pride could be considered the original sin," Wiswell said. Justin Chennette, the first openly gay commissioner for York County, voted in favor of the proclamation. Though disappointed with the decision, Chenette says he feels confident a Pride proclamation will happen next year.
