MDOT, towns to present causeway plans.The Maine Department of Transportation and the towns of Deer Isle and Stonington will host an in-person public informational session on Wednesday, June 10, at 6 p.m.at the Deer Isle Town Hall to present the final design and schedule for the Deer Isle Causeway rebuild.Questions, comments or inquiries may be submitted during the in-person meeting or through an online virtual meeting to be offered this month.The Hancock County Emergency Management Agency has had the causeway listed as a top public safety priority for years and has been working with the towns.In 2022, the agency organized a tabletop planning exercise for area first responders to consider a hypothetical breach of the causeway.Major storms in 2023-24 repeatedly flooded and eroded the roadbed.The purpose of the project is to mitigate coastal flooding impacts on the critical island infrastructure.The project includes the main causeway as well as the smaller one on the southern edge of the bridge adjacent to Bridge End Park.In addition to the June 10 meeting, an online virtual public meeting will be available during the formal public comment period and can be viewed at any time June 8-24.The virtual public comment period will also allow the public to submit online comments and questions, which will be answered by MaineDOT staff.Access to this and all other active meeting presentations is available at the MaineDOT Public Meetings Page at bit.ly/mainedot-meetings.Additional questions or comments may also be directed to the Senior Project Manager Laurie Rowe who will attend the June 10 meeting.Rowe can be reached at 207-215-5072 or Laurie.Rowe@maine.gov.
