GDOT contractor killed after vehicle strikes workers on I-85 next to Atlanta airport, police say | 11alive.com.COLLEGE PARK, Ga.— A Georgia Department of Transportation contractor was killed and another worker was injured on Thursday afternoon after the two were struck by a vehicle while working along Interstate 85 North, the College Park Police Department said.Police said officers and fire rescue crews responded to the scene around 3:05 p.m.near Airport Loop Road after receiving reports of a fatality along the interstate.Preliminary information indicates the two people were working alongside I-85 North when they were hit by a passing vehicle.One of the victims died from injuries sustained in the crash, police said.The second victim was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed the victims were contractors working for the agency.“The incident involved contractors working for GDOT,” spokesperson Natalie Dale said in a statement.Authorities said the driver involved returned to the scene and is currently being detained for questioning by investigators.The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.College Park police said the Georgia State Patrol is expected to take over the traffic fatality investigation.No additional information has been released.
