Ottawa police officer shot while assisting in homicide arrest WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - An Ottawa police officer has been shot while assisting the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Ottawa police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to apprehend a homicide suspect from Kansas City, Missouri in Ottawa when the officer was shot. During their initial approach, the suspect fired multiple times from within a residence, striking the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital but has since been released and is recovering at home. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says officers did not return fire during the encounter. The Ottawa Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team was later relieved by tactical teams from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. At 9:40 p.m., the tactical teams made entry into the residence where they found the suspect, 33-year-old Zachary Pule from Coffeyville. He was dead from a gunshot wound. The KBI said no shots were fired by law enforcement during the course of the incident. The KBI is investigating the incident and that investigation is on-going. Copyright 2026 KWCH.
