Search underway for missing boater on Rockport pond

ROCKPORT — A search was underway Sunday for a boater missing on Chickawaukie Pond.Knox County Regional Communications received a report shortly after 8 a.m.Sunday from a resident of Chickawaukie Pond Road who heard a man calling for help on the pond.The resident had earlier seen the man and a dog in the boat.The boat was later found going in circles near the shore on the Rockport side of the pond.Crews arrived at both the Chickawaukie Pond Road side but also at the boat launch on the Rockland side.The person was not located and Rockland and Rockport Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Rockland, Rockport, Thomaston Police, and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to the two sides of the pond.The Maine Warden Service arrived with an officer and a boat.Rockland was also called to deploy its drone to help in the search.Responders were also walking the shore on the Rockport side.The dog was found on the boat.Shortly after 10:30 a.m., the Warden Service ordered the pond closed and called for its dive team.The pond covers about 360 acres and is as deep as 31 feet.The water temperature is estimated at 60 degrees.This story appears through a media partnership with Midcoast Villager.
