NC man sentenced to 25-30 years in prison for 2022 murders that happened days apart.A 23-year-old Durham man will serve between 25 and 30 years in prison for two murders that happened just days apart.Nizer Bennett pleaded guilty to the murder of Marcus Ortega-Burch on Monday morning in Durham County Court.Other WRAL Top Stories Bennett was charged with the 2022 murders in both Cumberland and Durham counties.Last year, a Cumberland County jury found Bennett guilty of second-degree murder for the shooting of Fort Bragg soldier Nicholas Bobo.Assistant District Attorney Mary Judge Darrow told the judge that shell casings from both crime scenes matched."Apparently, this had been set up to be a robbery of the victim.Police found four bullet holes on the driver's side of the car,” Darrow said.Marcus Ortega-Burch was 20 years old in 2022, when he was found dead in his car in Durham.Darrow read a statement from Ortega-Burch’s mother.“My son Marcus served as the glue in our family that held us all together, doing any favor that was asked of him,” she said.His sister Kayla told WRAL News her brother was devoted to family in an interview after the sentencing.“Marcus was motivating,” Kayla Ortega-Burch said."Any time we would call, no matter what time, he would answer.In the middle of the night, he would answer.He would always answer the phone." She's satisfied with the sentence, but she emphasized it doesn't bring Marcus back."At least he gets to live,” Kayla said of Bennett.“My brother wanted kids.My brother wanted a life.He wanted to go to Hawaii, jump off an airplane [and] have fun.” Bennett's sentences in Durham and Cumberland counties will run concurrently.
