Ice jams drive flooding in western Alaska, trigger code red advisory.Several western Alaska coastal communities are under a Code Red advisory as river ice jams continue to cause flooding across the Yukon Delta region.“We expected it to be more of a dynamic breakup. This year we had kind of a combination of extreme cold temperatures and excessive water and snow in some areas, while others saw less,” said LaNita Copeland with the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.Communities including Emmonak and Alakanuk are now under the advisory from the National Weather Service as breakup conditions continue to evolve across the region.Due to limited internet connectivity, Your Alaska Link was only able to speak with the mayor of Emmonak by phone about current conditions in the community.Mayor David Roland said an ice jam caused overnight flooding that isolated about 20 homes and forced the precautionary evacuation of three people from the women’s shelter. No injuries were reported, though flooding also closed both roads to the airport.Your Alaska Link also spoke with the Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center about the advisory."Right now, the Yukon River is mostly broken up.We call it the breakup front, where it goes from in-place ice to broken-up ice, and that moves downriver. But there's still a lot of ice and high water moving down behind it," said Kyle Van Peursem with the Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center.Forecasters say high water and heavy rainfall are expected to continue through Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.Officials are urging residents to stay updated with the latest information and be prepared in case evacuations become necessary.
