Man killed after firing at Omaha police officers during stand-off.Omaha police shoot, kill man who fired at officers during stand-off A man is dead after a stand-off that ended with him shooting at Omaha police officers on Tuesday evening.Officers responded to 19th Street, between Bancroft and Elm streets, around 8:42 a.m.for a disturbance at a residence.Omaha police Chief Todd Schmaderer said when officers arrived at the scene, they learned a man was "highly agitated" during an attempted eviction.Omaha police said officers could hear the racking of a gun and took extra precautions, arranging for a warrant.During that period of time, the Omaha police SWAT team was deployed and attempted to negotiate with the man after law enforcement got two people out of the home safely.Schmaderer said the man made repeated statements that he had a high-capacity rifle, and repeatedly talked about having 2,300 rounds.He also added that the man told officers to "bring it" and told them he was ready to shoot it out.Omaha police said the SWAT commander at the scene talked with the negotiator, and decided for the safety of the community to use heavy equipment to break an upstairs window.The man, who has not been identified at this time, emerged with the gun in that window and started shooting at the SWAT team, which returned fire, Omaha police said.Officials said the man is dead inside the home.Mayor John Ewing Jr.released the following statement after the incident: "The events today presented a clear danger, and based on what I know, Omaha police responded appropriately.I am grateful that no one else was hurt.As a retired Omaha Police Department deputy chief, I can say from personal experience that officers are always prepared to defend themselves when engaging in a deadly force confrontation.If a suspect is firing at you, an officer has little choice.As the shooting is investigated per Nebraska law, it is important to note that police work is dangerous.I am thankful that the officers were not injured.I want the men and women in uniform who protect our city and the residents they are called to serve to be safe.My condolences to the family of the deceased."
