Whitmer orders flags to half-staff to honor former U.S.representative | wzzm13.com.LANSING, Mich.Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags in Michigan to half-staff on Saturday to honor former U.S.Joe Schwarz.Schwarz served as a state senator for 16 years and spent one term in Congress.He was known for his commitment to his constituents and his willingness to reach across the aisle.He died on May 27.The lowering of the flags with coincide with Schwarz's funeral.“Michigan lost a leader and a hero, Dr.Joe Schwarz,” said Gov.“Joe was not only a mentor but a friend.A proud Wolverine, he offered rivalry on game days and laughs on tough days.He led a life of service and embodied everything that makes our state so special.He was a reminder that we can sit on different sides of the aisle – and even cheer for opposing teams – yet still find common ground serving the people of Michigan.As a physician, a professor, and a representative, Joe led a life that put people first.My condolences go out to his family and loved ones." Schwarz graduated from high school in Battle Creek and went on to attend the University of Michigan.After receiving his bachelor's degree, he later returned to the university as a professor for the Ford School of Public Policy.Schwarz also held a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University.He worked as an ear, nose and throat doctor and as a combat medic in the Navy.He went on to be chair of the 2008 embryonic stem cell ballot initiative.As chair of the Senate Appropriations Higher Education Subcommittee, he also advocated for colleges and universities throughout his career.Flags should be returned to full staff on Sunday, June 7.
