Garbage truck fire extinguished at Lenox Twp.landfill – Macomb Daily.A garbage truck caught fire Wednesday afternoon on the grounds of Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township, sending a large plume of dark-colored smoke into the sky that was visible for miles. The fire took place about 3 p.m.at the landfill site, which is east of Gratiot Avenue.Lenox Township Public Safety Director Jeff White said few details were immediately available but added the fire has been extinguished. There were no known injuries to either the truck driver or fire personnel, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.“It created a big cloud of black smoke that I’m sure could be seen from quite a distance,” White said.White said firefighters from Lenox Township and Richmond responded to the blaze.Richmond Fire Department had a water truck respond to the landfill because of a lack of fire hydrants available to serve a fire and the need for additional water.Authorities did not immediately know what started the fire. The 236-acre landfill is owned by Waste Management.According to the landfill’s website, the Type II non-hazardous municipal solid waste disposal landfill opened in 1987.It is the only active landfill in Macomb County that provides services for Michigan communities located primarily in southeast Michigan.Come back to macombdaily.com for further updates as they become available.
