Governor Announces New Workforce Initiative - WHKY.Governor Josh Stein has proclaimed May 18-22 as Heat Safety Week in North Carolina to… Governor Announces New Workforce Initiative North Carolina is launching a major new workforce initiative aimed at strengthening connections between employers and job seekers across the state.Governor Josh Stein announced that the Governor’s Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships is working to engage 50,000 employers as partners in building the state’s talent pipeline.The effort is one of 11 workforce development goals established by the Council last year.Stein said the workforce system must serve both job seekers and employers, adding that businesses need a seat at the table to help shape the workforce pipeline that will support North Carolina’s growing economy.Employers who partner with the Council and the NCWorks system will gain access to workforce training resources, talent recruitment assistance, and support programs designed to help companies hire, train, and retain skilled workers.Businesses of all sizes are being encouraged to complete an employer interest form through the North Carolina Department of Commerce.State leaders say the information gathered will help workforce partners better understand the needs and challenges facing employers while identifying opportunities for collaboration.North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said employer involvement is critical to successfully connecting workers with jobs.Senator Eddie Settle also encouraged rural small business owners to participate, saying the partnerships can help companies grow and strengthen their workforce.The initiative also includes grants of up to $50,000 for local Workforce Development Boards to support innovative employer outreach programs.State officials say Governor Stein has announced more than 42,000 new jobs and over $29 billion in new investments in North Carolina since taking office in January 2025.
