City of Nampa to host free water-training activity Saturday.School is just about out for the Treasure Valley.With the rising temperatures and the extended daylight hours, it’s probably time to talk about water safety.Or maybe every day is a good day to talk about drowning.In the U.S., “someone dies from drowning every 10 minutes,” according to the YMCA.Drowning is also “the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5-14,” according to a January 2026 U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention article.More children ages 1-4 die from drowning than any other cause of death, according to the CDC.To try to reduce the risk of drowning, the city of Nampa has a free safety talk for families slated for Saturday, from 10 a.m.to noon, at Lakeview Water Park — 1304 7th St.— the city stated in a news release.Lakeview Water Park and Lincoln Pool open on Friday.“May is Water Safety Awareness Month, and we are kicking off the summer by teaching kids how to be safe in and around the water,” the release states.At the event, children will be given a game board that needs stamps at each station to win.Once they earn all of the stamps, they’ll receive a free day pass entry to Lakeview Water Park or Lincoln Pool, the release states.Lakeview generally costs between between $2 — for children up to 5 years old — and $4.50 for adults.The stations include: Sun safety — St.Luke’s How to call 911 and hands-only CPR — Canyon County Paramedics Canal safety — Nampa Fire Do you LOVE local news?Get Local News Headlines in your inbox daily.Boating safety — Canyon County Sheriff’s Office In-water rescue skills — Nampa Parks & Recreation swim instructors A few tips from YMCA are: Don’t swim alone — Lifeguards are trained to monitor active swimmers and know how to react quickly when something happens Don’t play breath-holding games — Holding your breath underwater can cause drowning and has several other risks, even passing out underwater Don’t jump in the water to save a friend — The YMCA recommends “reach, throw, don’t go.” This means you can help a friend or relative without putting yourself at risk Enter the water feet first — Don’t dive into the water head first and don’t dive without knowing what you’re doing.Know how to get in and out of a pool, and wear a life jacket Stay within designated swim areas — No matter if in a pool, lake or ocean, stay in designated areas Jessica Vanderpool, Harward Recreation Center Aquatic supervisor, sounds concerned with the issue of drowning, especially how it impacts the state of Idaho, according to the release.“The drowning rate in Idaho is above the national average, and the city of Nampa is dedicated to education on water safety,” Vanderpool said in the release.“We are excited to partner with some amazing organizations to bring you an event focused on teaching kids and parents how to be safe in, on and around the water.” In addition to utilizing Lakeview Water Park and Lincoln Pool, people can also use Nampa’s free splash pads at Midway Park and Orah Brandt Park, the release states.Splash pads are open through Labor Day.For more information, call 208-268-5858 or visit namparecreation.org.
