Storm damage claim denials: Oklahoma Insurance Department offers help for homeowners OKLAHOMA (KXII) - Homeowners who receive denial letters for storm damage insurance claims have options beyond accepting the decision, according to Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready.“Sometimes folks just don’t have a good understanding of their policy or maybe even a denial, they want that explained in a little more detail why that was denied,” Mulready said. The Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Consumer Assistance Division offers free help to homeowners navigating claim denials.Homeowners can file a complaint online on the first page of the department’s website or call an 800 number with questions.“Our folks know the law and they know our rules and they know the insurance contract and so they can be helpful,” Mulready said.If the complaint process doesn’t resolve a claim denial, mediation is another option.Insurance companies can currently decline mediation, but the Oklahoma Insurance Department is pushing to make it mandatory by law.“We had a bill to make a lot of changes, a lot of great improvements for consumers that didn’t get through the legislature...Next legislative session, I assume we’ll take another shot at that,” Mulready said.Mulready advised homeowners to know their policy, document all damage and not walk away if denied.Copyright 2026 KXII.All rights reserved.
