Man who killed Greenville officer to spend life in prison.Man who killed Greenville officer to spend life in prison KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - The man accused of killing Terrell police officer Jacob Candanova during a 2024 traffic stop has reached a plea agreement with the State on May 27.In the courtroom of 422nd District Court Judge Shelton T.W.Gibbs IV, Darrian Cortez Johnson pleaded guilty to capital murder of a peace officer, agreed to a sentence of life in prison, and must pay a nearly $60,000 fine, judicial records show.On December 8, 2024, Officer Candanoza was shot to death by Johnson, a resident of Mississippi, during a late-night traffic stop in a motel parking lot for an expired license plate.Before his death, Candanoza successfully provided the license plate during the initial stages of the traffic stop, aiding in his own investigation, officials said at the time.Candanoza left behind his wife and their 5-year-old daughter.Deputies located the suspect vehicle near the Kaufman and Van Zandt County line.Officials say it was driven by Johnson.The vehicle was pursued by deputies, resulting in a crash.Johnson ran from the crash into a densely wooded area, according to the 2024 TDCJ statement.Van Zandt County Sheriff Joe Carter contacted Sergeant Dyer of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice - H.H.Coffield Unit, requesting assistance in the search for Johnson.Sergeant Dyer and Officer Phillips from the Coffield Unit Kennel, accompanied by trained pack dogs and horses, went to the scene.After a multi-hour search, Sergeant Dyer and Officer Phillips, on horseback, located Johnson near a coffee shop located off of Texas Highway 19 in the pre-dawn hours.Dyer and Phillips, with the assistance of other agencies, turned Johnson over to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and he was charged with capital murder of a peace officer.He has remained in jail for the 535 days since.Johnson was represented by court appointed attorneys Paul J.Johnson and Lalon Peale.The State of Texas was represented by Marc Moffitt.Previous reporting: Alleged shooter charged with capital murder of peace officer in Kaufman County New details released in arrest of suspect in Terrell officer’s fatal shooting Copyright 2026 KLTV.All rights reserved.
