Mike Collins fires aide who made controversial social media post.Mike Collins fires aide who made controversial social media post ATLANTA, Ga.— Locked in a tight battle for Georgia’s GOP Senate nomination, U.S.Mike Collins has fired an aide who made a controversial post on social media last week.Collins confirmed the dismissal of the aide, who he did not mention by name.“We had a problem within our organization,” Collins said.“I saw the problem, and we fixed the problem. It’s a business.I do not agree with (the post) in any way or condone it.” Collins - who is facing Derek Dooley in the June 16 Republican Senate runoff - said his campaign has brought on some new personnel, with “a lot of them coming from the White House (and) President Trump’s administration.Collins said he would “love” to have Trump’s endorsement. The president has not endorsed any candidate in a race to determine who will face Democratic U.S.Jon Ossoff this fall.“The man has an impeccable ability to just put his thumb on the scale at the right time to really sway things,” Collins said.Last week, a campaign website account for Collins’ GOP Senate bid appeared to criticize a woman who accused former NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer of assault. The post came in response to a social media post from GOP consultant Luke Thompson, who referenced a poll showing Collins with a 46% to 41% lead over Dooley.Thompson’s wife, Brooke Nevils, was one of several women who accused Lauer of sexual misconduct, harassment and assault.Lauer was subsequently fired from NBC on Nov.29, 2017, and he was removed from the Today show that morning. The Mike Collins War Room social media account then posted this comment - which has since been removed - on X: Collins had previously denounced the social media post.Collins later said he made “staffing changes to ensure this type of behavior never happens again.” Nevils’ identity was first reported in 2019 in Ronan Farrow’s book “Catch and Kill,” which described an alleged incident in 2014 during the Sochi Olympics.Lauer has denied the allegation and said their relationship was consensual.Farrow was also one of Lauer’s accusers. In an Atlanta Press Club debate held before Georgia’s nationally watched May 19 primaries, Collins was asked about his social media strategy.National political commentator Erick Erickson took to social media, criticizing the Collins’ post.“Chief reason I can’t bring myself to support Collins is that his campaign team are jacka***s,” he said.“This is not the first time Collins’s team has done this sort of stuff.” Later, Erickson also said, “A campaign team that makes jokes about a rape victim who attempted suicide is a campaign team that’ll be making antisemitic jokes in the general election against Jon Ossoff. The team lacks the character to win.” Thompson himself also responded on X.“Collins surrounds himself with unprofessional and incompetent cretins,” he said.“This is not a team capable of holding its own against the Ossoff war chest.Just a deeply stupid group of low grade operators.” Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT.All rights reserved.
