Man charged with attempted murder in Aiken officer-involved shooting.Man charged with attempted murder in Aiken officer-involved shooting GRANITEVILLE, S.C.(WRDW/WAGT) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged a Warrenville man with attempted murder Thursday in connection with an officer-involved shooting in March.Jacob Harrison Craven, 32, is accused of assaulting an Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputy with intent to kill on March 6 during a burglary in progress on Connector Road in Graniteville.Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies say they responded to the 100 block of Connector Road shortly before 9 a.m.that day for a burglary in progress.When deputies arrived, they found the back door of the home had been forced open.Two suspects, Craven and Grady Lafone Owenby, 51, of Beech Island, were inside the home.Owenby tried to get away by jumping out a window but was taken into custody after an altercation with deputies.According to arrest warrants, Owenby attempted to injure two Aiken County law enforcement officers when they attempted to place him under arrest.The warrants state Owenby attempted to grab a deputy’s handgun from their holster.According to the arrest warrant for Craven, a deputy encountered him at the rear of the home and Craven turned and fled inside with the deputy in pursuit.The deputy encountered Craven in the front bedroom of the residence where Craven brandished a handgun and pressed it against the deputy’s torso, according to the arrest warrant.Court records say the deputy was wearing clothing and equipment which identified him as a law enforcement officer.The deputy fired, striking Craven.EMS transported Craven to an area hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained during the incident.No deputies were injured.Sheriff Marty Sawyer said deputies are trained to make critical decisions in moments where lives may be at risk.“Our deputies and the community experienced a serious and difficult incident today,” Sawyer said in a statement.“We are thankful that none of our deputies were injured during this incident.They are trained to make critical decisions in moments where lives − including their own and those of the public − may be at risk.I stand behind the actions of our deputies involved in this incident as they worked to protect the community.” Craven was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center Thursday.Outside of the attempted murder charge issued by SLED, Craven also faces Aiken County charges of burglary first degree, grand larceny, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and commission of violent crime while on bond or pretrial release for violent crime for the incident on Connector Road.Craven is also charged with possession of implements capable of being used in crime in a separate case.Owenby is charged with burglary first degree, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, two counts of assault and battery in the first degree and two counts of resisting arrest for the incident on Connector Road.Owenby is also charged with grand larceny from an unrelated incident and booekd into the Aiken County Detention Center.The case will be prosecuted by the 2nd Circuit Solicitor’s Office.SLED investigated the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.This was the eighth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first of the year for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.In 2025, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina.The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office had four officer-involved shootings last year.Officials said the home was empty at the time of the burglary.Major Jason Griffin said people should be aware of their surroundings, even when at home.“If you ever walk in and someone is in your house, I would leave the house.I wouldn’t continue to go in and call 911,” Griffin said.Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT.All rights reserved.
