Beyond the Podium: 2nd Congressional District candidate Kathy Dolter.Beyond the Podium: 2nd Congressional District candidate Kathy Dolter CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Retired army nurse Kathy Dolter is one of three Democrats running for Iowa's Second Congressional District this year.The seat is open since Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hinson is running for U.S.Dolter faces Matthew 25 founder Clint Twedt-Ball and state Rep.Lindsay James in the primary.In our one-on-one Beyond the Podium interview Dolter discusses immigration, the Iran War, affordability and healthcare.You can watch her full interview with Iowa's News Now reporter Ray Baccari below.Dolter says her proven track record is why Democratic voters should select her in the primary.I've always passionately advocated for patient service members, veterans, nursing students, nurses, and nursing faculty my entire career," Dolter said."And I would passionately advocate for all the constituents of Iowa's Second Congressional District.A core pillar of Dolter's campaign is healthcare.She favors universal healthcare and says there are a number of things Congress can work on in that area of policy."Number one could repeal that big bad bill with its cuts to Medicaid," Dolter said."Number two, we could increase, restore the subsidies to the Affordable Care Act.Number three, we could increase provider reimbursement for Medicaid and Medicare so that providers would actually take those." Dolter also wants to "restore and fully fund" the Department of Veterans Affairs.Among the top issues candidates are focusing on this year is gas prices, which have gone up due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.Dolter says there's only one way gas prices can be lowered.The only thing that will cause the gas prices to go down is President Trump stopping his war, that's the end of the story," Dolter said.There's nothing you can do On immigration, Dolter believes in reforming Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as opposed to abolishing it."We need ICE back at the border to keep people from coming in, but immigrants coming in who claim asylum, we should take care of them and need to have enough judges, find enough judges so we can keep those courts going," Doler said, adding that she believes immigrants "are the engines of our economy." "Their payroll taxes shore up our Social Security," Dolter said."Their federal income taxes keep our budget from being further into a deficit." Dolter favors term limits for Congress.Dolter was asked if she'd support any efforts to impeach President Donald Trump if elected with a Democratic-led House in November.She said no on impeaching Trump, but instead favors impeaching Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Health Secretary Robert F.Kennedy Jr.The primary is June 2.Whoever wins between Dolter, James and Twedt-Ball will face either Republican state Sen.Charlie McClintock or former Republican state Rep.Joe Mitchell in November.Independent Dave Bushaw is also running.
