Housing is a public health issue...and opportunity.This week on The Upswing, WTMJ’s Jeff Sherman was joined by Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity CEO Brian Sonderman.On the heels of a new Wisconsin DHS report, Sonderman discussed how housing is a public health issue, first and foremost.He also detailed the collaborative nature of housing and Milwaukee County’s policy approach, noting current stats and housing prices in the area.Sonderman added that the path to homeownership often begins with asking people why they want to own a home, then working from there to navigate the many challenges facing homeowners today.Brian’s path to Habitat began after starting his adult life a CPA and then a minister, where he developed many of skills he now uses to help build homes for those in need.As housing prices rise, Sonderman said Habitat aims to help people achieve homeownership in ways similar to past generations.Building homes is a collaborative effort among nonprofit organizations, for-profit developers and businesses, and local and state governments.Brian also discussed Habitat for Humanity’s recent collaboration with the Milwaukee Brewers.Their partnership is one of their longest-running.Players include outfielder Andrew Vaughn, who helped for the first time, and pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who has remained one of the most committed participants despite injuries over the years.He also highlighted volunteer opportunities and noted that shopping at Habitat for Humanity ReStores is an easy way to support families experiencing homelessness.Sherman closed the show with a note about a new art gallery owned by two Milwaukee area business leaders, JK Art House, and encouraged listeners to attend their summer reunions.The Upswing is presented by Horicon Bank.
