Names released in deputy-involved death in Town of Union TOWN OF UNION, Wis.(WEAU) - The names of the officer and man killed in the officer-involved death investigation in the Town of Union have been released.According to a press release from the Wisconsin DOJ, at around 7:25 a.m.on the morning of Monday, May 4, two Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy 312/North Crossing at Hwy 12.Investigators said the crash left three vehicles damaged and caused one non-life-threatening injury.One person involved in the crash, identified as 34-year-old Kelly Whalen, ran from the scene.One deputy, Joseph Wollum, left the crash scene to search for Whalen and later made contact near Lyle Lane and Chuck Lane.During that encounter, Whalen brandished what law enforcement reported was a knife.Deputy Wollum fired, striking the person.A knife was later recovered from the scene.Emergency medical personnel were called and lifesaving measures were attempted, but Whalen was pronounced dead at the scene.No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured.Deputy Wollum was wearing a body-worn camera and continues to be on an administrative assignment, per the agency’s policy.DCI is leading the investigation and is being assisted by a DCI crime response specialist, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Eau Claire Police Department and the Eau Claire County Medical Examiner.Copyright 2026 WEAU.All rights reserved.
