Marietta couple hits rare milestone as they celebrate 70th wedding anniversary....CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT IS IN EFFECT FOR ATLANTA FOR Saturday June 6...The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division has issued a Code Orange (Unhealthy for sensitive groups) Air Quality Alert for Atlanta for Saturday June 6.Under Code Orange conditions, the outdoor air quality is likely to be unhealthy for some people.Children, people who are sensitive to ozone, and people with heart or lung disease should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the late afternoon or early evening when ozone concentrations are highest.For additional information on the Air Quality Index, please visit http://airnow.gov.1 of 2 Reuel and Virginia Hamilton pose on their porch in Marietta.A Marietta couple is celebrating a rare milestone as they mark their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday.The couple — Dr.Reuel and Virginia Hamilton — have been married since 1956.The anniversary marks an exceptional accomplishment, as only 0.1% of couples reach their 70th anniversary, according to the U.S.Census Bureau.The pair met in 1953 on a blind date in Louisville, Kentucky.Reuel Hamilton, a native of south Georgia, was a freshman at the University of Louisville, while Virginia Hamilton was a high school senior who lived in town with her parents.They were set up by Reuel Hamilton’s fraternity brother whose high school girlfriend was friends with Virginia.Reuel noticed Virginia’s pretty face and sweet demeanor, while Virginia said she took note of her future husband’s six-foot-one inch frame and good manners.The pair discovered they had things in common as they chatted and that their families knew each other.Reuel Hamilton’s uncle lived in Louisville and knew Virginia Hamilton’s maternal family.“Turns out they were acquaintances and had good things to say about her family,” he said.Reuel Hamilton said he was smitten almost as soon as he met Virginia.He recalled taking a city bus to the neighborhood she lived in and running six blocks to her parents’ house while he was in college to see her.The couple married in 1956 while he was in dental school.After a few years in the U.S.Army where the Hamiltons lived in various states, the couple settled in Cobb County in 1965 to establish his oral surgery practice and raise their three children.Virginia Hamilton said the couple endured many challenges together as they moved, built careers and raised their family.She said the key to sustaining their marriage has been remaining open to new things and adapting as situations change.“As you get older, you have to adapt,” she said.Reuel Hamilton said he and his wife have also kept their relationship positive by discussing problems to avoid disagreements turning into full-blown fights.“We’d argue, we’d disagree, but eventually we’d discuss things and most of the time come to an agreement,” he said.The Hamiltons, who are both 90, said they are marking 70 years of marriage with a simple celebration with friends and family.The couple said they plan to open their home to those close to them so they can drop in when it suits them for food and quality time.Remember the human.Show other commenters the respect they deserve as human beings.If you wouldn't say it in a crowded room full of people you don't know, don't say it here.Keep it Clean.Please avoid obscene, vulgar, lewd, racist or sexually-oriented language.PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK.Don't Threaten.Threats of harming another person will not be tolerated.Be Truthful.Don't knowingly lie about anyone or anything.Be Proactive.Use the 'Report' link on each comment to let us know of abusive posts.
