Annual sojourn celebrates America’s 250th anniversary with history of the Schuylkill – Pottsville Republican Herald.SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Let the loading begin. One keg of powder, one pouch of flints, one sack of flour, one sack of coffee, a bedroll, one cartridge box, a bayonet and scabbard, a rifle or musket, a haversack and a canteen should cover the basics. At the least that inventory would be necessary if one were caught in a time warp and transported back to the banks of the Schuylkill River during the American Revolutionary War.Unlike those Continental Soldiers, however, such supplies won’t be necessary for those reliving the history made on and along the Schuylkill when the 28th annual Schuylkill River Sojourn departs from The Island in Schuylkill Haven on Saturday, June 13, and concludes its 112-mile trip at Boathouse Row in Philadelphia on Friday, June19.Organized by Schuylkill River Greenways, the Sojourn combines a guided kayak and canoe trip with overnight camping, meals and logistical support. Each day typically covers 14 to 18 miles, with trained river guides leading the group and support teams handling gear transport and shuttles.Guides are certified in CPR, first aid and water safety, with a lead boat setting the pace and a sweep at the back to make sure no one falls behind. This year’s trip connects to the United States’ 250th anniversary, with programming focused on the river’s role in the country’s history. The Schuylkill is often referred to as the “River of Revolutions” for its impact on the American, industrial and environmental eras, as well as its current use for recreation. For more than 10,000 years the Schuylkill River has been a vital artery for human activity, serving as a focal point for pivotal battles during the American Revolution, the fuel source for the Industrial Revolution and one of the earliest large-scale environmental reclamation efforts in the United States. Here are some highlights from the American Revolution in 1777-78.Crossing Movements: In the autumn of 1777, the river’s fords were fiercely contested between American and British forces, leading up to the British occupation of Philadelphia. The Valley Forge Encampment: Washington’s army retreated to the river’s banks, utilizing the Schuylkill as a natural barrier during the grueling winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge National Historical Park.Fort Mifflin Siege: Located at the confluence of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, this patriot stronghold withstood a relentless 6-day British bombardment in late 1777, allowing Washington’s troops to safely winter at Valley Forge. Here is the Schuylkill River’s role in the Industrial and Navigation Boom.Schuylkill Arsenal (1800): Established to supply the U.S.military, it acted as a staging ground for the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition.Schuylkill Canal (1815–1825): The Schuylkill Navigation Company built a series of locks and canals to transport anthracite coal from Schuylkill County directly to Philadelphia, heavily fueling America’s industrial revolution. Here is a look at the river’s role in innovation, pollution, and environmentalism.Fairmount Water Works (1812): Built to pump drinking water directly from the river into Philadelphia, this pioneering municipal project was a major U.S.attraction and icon.Fairmount Park Commission (1867): In an effort to curb rampant industrial runoff and a devastating typhoid epidemic upriver, Philadelphia chartered the nation’s first environmental land-protection commission to protect the river.Schuylkill River Project (1940s–1979): Recognized as one of the first large-scale environmental river cleanup initiatives undertaken by a government agency to remove decades of coal silt and industrial waste.Sport and recreation played a large role in the Schuylkill River, as well.Schuylkill Navy (1858): Tracing its competitive rowing origins back to the 1830s, this oldest governing body of amateur rowing in the U.S.hosts major regattas (like the Dad Vail) along Philadelphia’s famous Boathouse Row.Today, the 128-mile waterway is celebrated for its rich history and is protected as both a National and State Heritage Area. You can explore many of the historic towpaths and sites along the region by checking out the Schuylkill River Trail.“The initial response to this year’s Sojourn has been overwhelming in the best possible way,” said Alex Shandera, Events Coordinator for Schuylkill River Greenways.“We work hard all year to make the Sojourn the best week we can for the returning paddlers and those joining us for the first time.“There’s no better way than the Schuylkill River Sojourn to appreciate the amazing resource we have in the Schuylkill River.” More information about the Sojourn, and the Heritage Area along with a full season of events, can be found on SRG’s website: www.schuylkillriver.org.(Dietz is a member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association.Contact the writer: outdoors@republicanherald.com.)
