Suspect released in Lake Afton death investigation Man arrested for murder freed due to 72-hour rule while autopsy results pending WICHITA, Kan.(KWCH) - A man accused in his girlfriend’s death at Lake Afton has been released from jail, according the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. On May 8, deputies found Dorothy Finley, 55, dead inside a camper on the Lake Afton campgrounds where she lived with her boyfriend, 66-year-old Robert Courchaine.Deputies said she had multiple injuries to her head, consistent with blunt force trauma.Courchaine was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County jail for first-degree murder and domestic violence aggravated battery. Why he was released On May 12, the sheriff’s office said detectives presented the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for charging review. At that time, the final autopsy report, including toxicology results from the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center, remained pending.“Because those results are necessary to determine the official cause of death, criminal charges were not immediately filed,” said the sheriff’s office.“Under Kansas law, a person arrested and held in custody must have charges filed within 72 hours in order to remain in custody with a bond.Because the final autopsy results had not yet been determined, the suspect had to be released from custody.” The sheriff’s office said that once the coroner determines the official cause of death, detectives will present the updated case findings to the District Attorney’s Office for further charging consideration. The investigation remains active and ongoing.Copyright 2026 KWCH.All rights reserved. To report a correction or typo, please email news@kwch.com
