Elba shooting suspect released to family home.WINONA — An Elba shooting suspect was released from commitment into a family member's home, according to Winona County court proceedings.Ava Leone Kock, 65, was arrested in August 2025 after allegedly shooting seven bullets at a neighbor's vehicle, sending bullet fragments into the woman's eye.ADVERTISEMENT According to court documents, Kock told law enforcement she thought the woman and her partner were killing children and burying them in their home.Kock was found incompetent to stand trial on second-degree attempted murder and assault charges in November of 2025.According to a review hearing Thursday, June 2, Kock's criminal case is still on hold until she attains competency. However, she has made enough progress to be released from commitment into an older relative's Winona home.“Sounds like things are moving in the right direction,” Judge Dwight Luhmann said in court.Under Minnesota law, a person who is found incompetent to stand trial may be civilly committed or required to take part in a competency attainment program in or outside of jail.A competency attainment program may include treatment for mental health disorders, substance abuse, or other factors that render a person unable to understand and participate in their own legal defense.ADVERTISEMENT Kock's next review hearing is scheduled for Aug.In the interim, Luhmann ordered her to continue following her providers' treatment recommendations.
