State Shooting Association sues over new information requirements for gun purchases.State Shooting Association sues over new information requirements for gun purchases COLORADO (KKTV) - The Colorado State Shooting Association (CSSA) filed a lawsuit challenging House Bill 26-1126, which creates new requirements for firearm dealers.Governor Jared Polis signed HB26-1126 into law earlier this month, which requires gun retailers to keep records with the details of each purchase, including the name, age, and address of the buyer.Other required information includes: - The make, caliber, and finish of the firearm - The gun’s number and serial letter - The date of the transaction - The name of the person conducting the transaction That information is required to be available at all times for “inspection by a duly authorized peace officer.” The text of the bill says that information will no be used to “create or maintain a registry identifying firearm ownership.” CSSA argues that the bill creates “warrantless access to firearm purchase records,” violating the second and fourth amendment rights of Coloradans.According to the organization, the law allows access to information without probably cause, or "any showing of wrongdoing by the firearm owner." CSSA has filed multiple challenges against recent gun regulations in Colorado.Arguing in support of the legislation, Senate Democrats said regulating licensing can reduce both gun violence and suicides. They highlighted a study exploring the efficacy of a similar law in Connecticut.Copyright 2026 KKTV.All rights reserved.
